Our first potato harvest

Project Peru's first potato crop in our kitchen garden, a 'hands-on' experience for our children!

Our 'biohuerto' has been an important educational resource for our children's refuge, as well as producing fresh fruit and vegetables for two years now. This both enhances the children's educational experiences and their diets, but is a saving on costs too in the local market in Puente Piedra. We do, however, still use the local market and you can read one of our volunteer’s memories of this local market where we go every week:http://www.ottsworld.com/blogs/lima-market-puente-piedra/

More about the potato

In 1532 the Spaniards invaded Peru in search of gold. But the real treasure they took back to Europe was the potato. The potato originated in the Andes. Taken by the Spanish to Europe in the 16th century, it quickly spread across the globe. See more about the potato in http://projectperu.org.uk/about-peru/flo

A fairer slice of the Christmas cake in 2015?

It’s amazing the difference a cake can make to the lives of children trapped in the circle of poverty. One cake raffled for us this Christmas means that one child from our refuge will be able to afford to go to the local state school for a year, paying for uniforms, school materials, books and much more, or that four of our older students will be able to attend further education courses for one month. And we have twenty of these cakes  being raffled around the UK this Christmas, including in Edinburgh, Manchester, Ormskirk, Shrewsbury, London, Faversham, Littlehampton, Mansfield, Billingshurst, Dorking, Dunsfold, Milford and Guildford.

All ingredients, professional baking, icing and decorating, are donated so that every penny of the money raised goes directly to support the education of the children in our refuge in Peru. YOU can help too just by making a donation. If you would like to donate to this cause anyway please send a donation marked ‘Christmas cakes’ to http://www.charitychoice.co.uk/project-peru-5466

Here are a few more examples of our cakes this year:
