School? A distant memory

Back to school in 2020? Instead, ongoing virtual online education and ‘home schooling.’ Education is vital for all children, but for those coming from extreme poverty it is their only chance of being able to change their lives, of having the chance to help their dysfunctional families, and of finding dignity and independence.

Schools in Peru have been closed since the start of the school year in late March 2020 … in effect since December 2019 because of the summer break … and there is no possibility of them reopening before March 2021 at the earliest, so offering a virtual education to all our children aged 4 to 18 is vital, whether at nursery, primary or secondary level. Dealing with children from so many year groups and individual classes … including some who need to learn to read and write either because of their age or because, before coming to Project Peru, they had never been to school … has been a steep learning curve for our staff, not least coping with the government’s on-line provision.
