Apart from our own work at the refuge we also, where possible, act locally to help distribute donated food supplies to neighbouring community groups and individuals in the shanty towns around us. We do this in particular at Christmas-time and New Year. What an adventure! In a loaded motor taxi, up the narrow, dusty, skiddy shanty town tracks … so steep that the moto ground to a halt and they had to walk the rest of the way up to locate the group they were supporting in a small olla común (a basic form of emergency soup kitchen), in a vast, sprawling shanty town way beyond our refuge. Everyone helped carry the parcels up and down the incredibly rocky, risky hills … and see the absolute joy of all those who received a parcel. Or, imagine the smiles behind the masks!
