Marking Peru’s bicentennial year of independence, an exhibition at the British Museum in London highlights the history, beliefs and cultural achievements of the different peoples who lived in Peru from around 2500 BC to the arrival of the Europeans in the 1500s, and their legacy in the centuries that followed.

More support for the local community
Where possible during the peak periods of the Covid-19 pandemic we were able to act as a local hub to help distribute donated staple food supplies to individuals, and also to go out to some of the local community groups who have set up ollas comunes (emergency community kitchens) to Continue Reading
Keeping safe and well at our refuge
¡Pan y dignidad! Keeping a healthy and balanced diet in our refuge … and here, some of our girls are learning to make bread. ¡Agua y libertad! Supplying fresh drinking water, and enough for our garden too. ¡Casa hogar y seguridad! Not only Covid-19 security, but regular fumigation and active Continue Reading

Supporting the local community at Christmas & New Year
Apart from our own work at the refuge we also, where possible, act locally to help distribute donated food supplies to neighbouring community groups and individuals in the shanty towns around us. We do this in particular at Christmas-time and New Year. What an adventure! In a loaded motor taxi, Continue Reading
What can you do for us?
In spite of it all in 2020 and the first months of 2021… not everything was locked down or off-limits! 7 year old twins cycled 200 miles in England in a month, just 4 months after learning to ride. A team from a company that has supported us for years collectively ran, Continue Reading
A walk in the brown desert foothills of the Andes
Hardly a walk in the park but, after nearly eight months inside the refuge, our suitably masked children went on a walk through the ‘countryside’ in the vast, bare surroundings of the refuge. No plant or person in sight but the inevitable ice cream seller found them…mutual delight! It’s clear to Continue Reading
Peru, England and Football
Though Perú just missed out on the Copa Mundial in Quatar in 2022, the national team did reach the semi-finals of the 2021 Copa América in July 2021. Known until 1975 as the South American Football Championship, this is the main men’s football tournament contested among national teams from South Continue Reading
Keeping safe and carrying on
Help us to keep safe and carry on Nothing’s straightforward any more, but at our refuge in Peru we’ve been ensuring the safety and well-being of our children, who haven’t actually been to school since December 2019 as the pandemic struck right at the end of the three-month summer break Continue Reading
School? A distant memory
Back to school in 2020? Instead, ongoing virtual online education and ‘home schooling.’ Education is vital for all children, but for those coming from extreme poverty it is their only chance of being able to change their lives, of having the chance to help their dysfunctional families, and of finding dignity Continue Reading
Spring arrives
In spite of all the problems outside our refuge, spring still comes in October in our part of the southern hemisphere. Here the children are enjoying gathering some of our new crops of bananas, yucca, sweet potatoes and more: and also having a celebratory pachamanca to welcome the first day Continue Reading
A big thank you
Thanks to all our friends and supporters who have made donations recently to help towards the ongoing costs of our work in Peru during the pandemic …and it’s not over yet! Far from it … but the children continue to live safely with us. So, a big thank you to all of you, including Continue Reading
Fiestas Patrias
Fiestas Patrias on July 28th mark a celebration of Peru’s independence from the Spanish Empire in 1821, that’s 200 years ago.
Keeping safe inside the refuge
One of our watchwords for our children has always been ‘Shelter and Safety’ (Casa hogar y Seguridad) and our refuge has often been described as an oasis in the desert; never more important than during the coronavirus pandemic which Peru– and South America in general– is suffering severely. We have been continuing our work with the children and Continue Reading
Helping out in the world beyond our refuge
Within the realms of the possible we are able from time to time to continue the distribution of staple food supplies to the community outside our refuge-albeit for now not involving the children. Conditions are frequently dire and the need is increasing on a daily basis. Please make a donation via Continue Reading
